Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (CASEL).
Social-emotional learning nurtures our capacity to become empathetic, accepting, and responsible citizens. We learn to embrace struggles as opportunities for growth, develop self-awareness, and solve problems. Ultimately, social-emotional learning is the foundation of all learning — as emotional well-being is essential to healthy, productive engagement in society.
