Discrimination and Harassment on the Basis of Race, Color, and National Origin Prohibited (Policy 2:270)

Winnetka Public Schools District 36 is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment for every student and a supportive workplace for all employees.

The District does not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on a person’s actual or perceived:

  • Race
  • Skin color
  • National origin
  • Language or cultural background

This applies to all school programs, activities, and settings.

Examples of Prohibited Behavior

The policy prohibits actions such as:

  • Treating students unfairly or disciplining them differently because of race or background
  • Denying students access to classes, activities, or services based on race or national origin
  • Using racial or ethnic slurs, stereotypes, or offensive language
  • Displaying racist symbols or engaging in racially motivated threats or physical harm

Harassment in any form that interferes with a student’s ability to learn or an employee’s ability to work is not permitted.

Reporting Concerns

Families, students, and staff are encouraged to report concerns as soon as possible. Reports may be made to:

  • A building administrator or principal
  • Any trusted school employee
  • The District’s Nondiscrimination Coordinator or Complaint Manager

Reports may be made with or without identifying information, and individuals may bring a support person when making a report.

How the District Responds

When a report is received:

  • The District will conduct a prompt and fair investigation
  • Privacy will be respected to the greatest extent possible
  • Appropriate steps will be taken to address the issue and prevent recurrence

The District may use supportive interventions, corrective actions, or discipline depending on the situation.

Protection From Retaliation

The policy strictly prohibits retaliation against anyone who:

  • Reports discrimination or harassment
  • Participates in an investigation
  • Helps provide information

Any retaliation should be reported immediately.

Accountability

If an investigation confirms a violation:

  • Students may face disciplinary action consistent with student behavior policies
  • Employees may face disciplinary action up to and including dismissal
  • Third parties (such as visitors or vendors) will be addressed appropriately

Knowingly false reports are also subject to consequences.
