A Mathematical Tour Through Thinking Tasks

In this class we will be formulating patterns of nature using the Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Ratio, analyzing mathematical statements about relationships through Algebra, exploring ideas of Calculus and building critical thinking and problems solving skills while reinforcing knowledge in fractions, decimals and numeracy.
Abracadabra: It's Magic!

Amaze your friends and family by learning the art of magic using cards, coins, ropes, and many other household items. Learn simple but impressive tricks. Make things appear and disappear. Create illusions.(Formerly known as "I am Houdini")
Animal Care

Learn how to handle and care for small animals, such as guinea pigs, hamsters, and common reptiles. We’ll explore these wonderful creatures, in addition to many others, through discussion, demonstrations, games, informational videos, activities, and more!
Archery 3-4

Practice skills needed for accuracy in target shooting. The Camp Archery Association system for recognizing achievement will be used. Beginners will receive instruction in fundamentals. Intermediate and advanced archers will use instinctive and point of aim shooting methods.
Athletes' Club 2-8

For the athlete who doesn't want to specialize in just one sport at Adventures. Each day will focus on a different athletic activity, allowing students to experience and play a variety of different activities over the course of the Adventures program. Soccer, ultimate frisbee, football, kickball, sacket, blamball, team handball, basketball and many more will be offered. Special tournament days will be held as well.
Basket Weaving

Basketry is fun to do on a hot summer day because you work with soaking wet reeds. You can learn this ancient craft by mastering just one weaving technique. New projects for repeating students.
Brain Games 2-4

Keep your brain active during the summer with fun and exciting memory, logic, problem-solving, math, and word games that sharpen the mind while mastering deductive reasoning skills. Increase team building, and communication skills utilizing Second city improv techniques that will spark creativity and fill the summer with laughs and building friendships.
Camping Adventures and S'more Fun

Every day is a campout! Our camping adventures will include shelter building, starting fires without matches, grilling snacks, playing games, telling ghost stories, finding treasures by geocaching, and other survival techniques.
Candle Making

Make, melt, and mold candles! Create colorful, themed, scented candles and candle holders. Join us for a fun and enlightening experience.
Ceramics

Students will explore making functional and decorative ceramics using coil, pinch, and slab hand building methods. After pieces are bisque fired students will have a variety of glazes to decorate their work.
Creative Cursive and Calligraphy Club

Have you ever wanted to read and write that curvy, creative writing your parents call cursive? Did you know that handwriting tells us about your personality, connects us to history, inspires creativity, and helps us to remember things? Creative penmanship can also relieve stress and evoke emotions. Together we will learn the strokes and curves of the cursive alphabet. We will also explore the art of calligrams.
Projects may include writing letters, making inspirational signs and posters as well as an inspirational word art project that you can take home to display in your space.
Devised theater/acting class
Grades 2,, 3, 4, ,5, 6, 7, 8

Devised theater/acting will integrate basic theater knowledge and performance skills through acting exercises that instill confidence, creativity, and self-empowerment. The group would come up with a play entirely from scratch, collaborating as a team to select a classic fairytale story everyone knows and loves but telling it in a way no one has seen before. This would be a great class for those with AND those without theater experience!
Draw! Draw! Draw!

Love to draw? Enjoy exploring a variety of drawing methods. From illustrations to shading and some perspective, all ages can practice and learn new techniques using pencil, pen and charcoal!
Filmmaking

Be a writer, producer, director and maybe even star of your own movie! Collaborate with other students on film projects you can be proud of while learning the tricks of sound editing, visual storytelling and how to use music in your film. We'll also be looking at some films that helped shape the artform.
Fishing - DOUBLE PERIOD
Grades:: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Fishing is a two period off campus class. We visit three local fishing holes, including Skokie Lagoons, Tower Beach, and The Glenn. All three areas are just short bus trips from school. Students must bring a fishing rod with a closed reel and are scheduled to bring two dozen nightcrawlers. All other fishing equipment (bobbers, hooks, and fishing line) will be supplied. Last year we caught over a hundred fish and a few big ones that got away. Don't let this class get away!
Flag Football 2-4

Enjoy this no contact version of America's other favorite pastime. Develop your skills on offense and defense, then test them on the gridiron. Future Bears apply here!
Greek Mythology Drama

In this class we will use theatre games to explore the stories and adventures of the Greek gods, goddesses, monsters, epic journeys and humorous misadventures. We will act out some of the myths while creating some stories of our own. This class is appropriate for all ages.
Gymnastics

In this class students will work on basic skill development on the floor, vaulting box, balance beam, and springboard. They will also practice rhythmic gymnastics using ribbons. Students will also have the time to choreograph and perform routines with their classmates.

Come challenge your mental and physical strength on the high ropes course at Skokie. Learn safe climbing techniques. Build your strength in outdoor activities designed to develop the personal and group skills needed for successful climbing.
Kitchen Magicians

Pull back your hair (if it's long) and bring an apron! Get ready to make and eat something delicious every day! Reading recipes, measuring, kitchen safety and tasting are all a part of the Kitchen Magicians experience. Join Kitchen Magicians where you'll make Birthday Cake Shake, lasagna cupcakes and Cinnamon Snails (just to name a few).

Life As An American Girl Doll

Journey through time with the Historical American Girl Dolls. We will travel over 200 years with all 23 of the Historical Dolls. Experience history while playing with these beautiful dolls. Crafts, traditions, treats, and activities will accompany you on our journey. All American Girl Doll lovers are invited to join us this summer.

Razzle Dazzle Science Magic

Polymers, putty, sparkles and slime! Do you like to mix things up? This class explores a variety of materials and science concepts, and occasionally gets very messy. Come learn about the how, why, and what behind many science wonders by observing, creating, and analyzing.
Recyclable Art

A new spin on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! In this class students will create a variety of crafts and projects from recycled treasures. Whether it is creating beads from magazines, tote bags out of t-shirts, or upcycling a tin can into a planter--we look to the recycling bin for inspiration and the possibilities are endless!
Running Club

Do you like sprinting? Tag games? Longer runs through the great outdoors of Winnetka? All of these activities are part of the experience of the Running Club. The students will set running goals and log their daily runs. An experienced half and full marathoner leads this class, who would love to inspire other runners.
Spa-licious

Why spend tons of money on Pampering Spa Goodies, when you can make your own. Learn how to take natural products and some spa-chemistry using ingredients that can be found in your kitchen and bathroom to create Fizzy Bath Bombs, Sweet Sugar Scrubs, Soothing Shower Discs and Whipped Body Butter, lotion bars, soap, lip scrub, lip balm, facial masks, nail polish, body glitter, hair products, and much more. Treat yourself or make it for someone special. Class includes everything you need to make and take home these products. We will also incorporate healthy living practices into your life such as: aromatherapy, relaxation, yoga, meditation and art, etc.
Stop Motion Animated Films 5-8

Students will create a stop-motion character to animate alongside other objects. Students can team up to create skits that they animate. We will edit with some sound effects and music a final movie the students can bring home.
STE(A)M Adventures
Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Come create your own STE(A)M Adventures and experience the CW CoLab- Washburne’s STE(A)M Lab. Students choose challenges of their choice focused around 3D Printing and Design, Lego Robotics, circuitry, and more, all while exploring the CoLab’s technology including 3D printers, laser Cutters, and updated Lego Mindstorm Bots! Using the design process, students will set goals, collaborate, and problem-solve as they complete challenges and level up their 21st-century skillset… while being creative and having fun! experience. Mr. Selgrat will help guide the process of exploration and discovery by encouraging students to problem solve, take risks, be creative, learn with and from their peers, and try and try again. The FUSE challenges are designed around student interests in music, design, and pop culture which are embedded with STEAM practices. These interests serve as a hook, motivating students to progress through challenges and, in the process, discover new STEAM-related interests. Summer STEAM Adventures creates a fun, collaborative, student-driven learning community.
Volleyball

This class is for all levels of players. An introduction to the fundamentals of volleyball including passing, serving, setting and spiking. Students will learn rules and court strategy and how to work together as a team. The class will include fun and popular lead up games such as Newcomb and King/Queen of the court. Students will be taught motor learning and skill development in a fun and engaging atmosphere!

Wee world is all about your imagination as you create miniature worlds using a variety of boxes, fabric, wallpaper, craft supplies, and recyclables. Work together or separately to create rooms, dollhouses, furniture, accessories, people, stores and more! Come join all the big fun in Wee World!
Wilderness Survival 4-8

Always be prepared, since you never know when disaster may strike! Train for basic survival in all different environments: at sea, in the woods, the desert or even in a tropical jungle!

Do you enjoy working with tools? Are you interested in learning more about building things with wood? We will work in the Washburne school woodshop to design, create and build all kinds of projects including a derby-style race car! All ability levels are welcome!

Make your own movies using Computer Animation! Be the Director of your own movie the way the professionals at Pixar and Dreamworks do it. Create a story, learn the subtle ins and outs of animation, design and animate your movie, then add sound effects and music at the end. The process of animation is slow, but bit by bit, a scene and character comes together and becomes as alive as you watch it unfold. I will guide you and show you the intricacies and tricks of the trade to use your imagination and computer to bring the story in your head to the world. With a script each of you have created, drawing storyboards, and characters, each will have not only a movie at the end, but a complete package of how you created that movie to keep and be proud of and to know that you MADE THIS MOVIE from beginning to the end.

For the athlete who doesn't want to specialize in just one sport at Adventures. Fishing - DOUBLE PERIOD

Fishing is a two period off campus class. We visit three local fishing holes, including Skokie Lagoons, Tower Beach, and The Glenn. All three areas are just short bus trips from school. Students must bring a fishing rod with a closed reel and are scheduled to bring two dozen nightcrawlers. All other fishing equipment (bobbers, hooks, and fishing line) will be supplied. Last year we caught over a hundred fish and a few big ones that got away. Don't let this class get away!
