English Language Arts Background
The District Language Arts Committee dedicated the last five years to aligning the Winnetka Language Arts curriculum to the Common Core English Language Arts Standards and to reformatting curriculum content into the Understanding by Design unit model (Wiggins and McTighe). The District Literacy Instructional Framework, which focuses on a balanced literacy approach, is the foundation of the Language Arts Curriculum. This document provides District-wide instructional guidelines for literacy (reading, writing, and language) instruction. The Literacy Instructional Framework mirrors the strands articulated in both the Common Core ELA Standards and the balanced literacy approach. These strands include reading, writing, oral language (listening and speaking), as well as foundational skills and language knowledge. Grade specific, standard-based curricula are detailed in the Reading and Writing Overviews.
