Common Core Anchor Writing Standard

Standard 1: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

K-8 Program Enduring Understanding

  • An argument’s effectiveness depends upon the validity and appropriateness of the supporting evidence and how the argument is conveyed.

Standard 2: Write informative/ explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

K-8 Program Enduring Understandings

  • Conveying information and ideas clearly depends upon selecting and analyzing information and organizing that content for a specific purpose.
  • An information writer’s purpose is to demonstrate understanding of a topic and for the readers to become informed.

Standard 3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

Standard 10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
