Part-time Literacy Facilitators work in each elementary school and Skokie School. As a facilitator, the roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Collaborate with classroom teachers using the Collaborative Learning Cycle/Coaching model
- Provide literacy support for new teachers in the building
- Facilitate differentiated instruction within the classroom
- Evaluate student learning and analyze data relative to student performance
- Research and evaluate resources, materials, and assessments for implementing the district curricula
- Coordinate and manage instructional materials
- Maintain and expand the Guided Reading Library
Literacy Facilitators in District 36 are involved in student-centered coaching. Student-centered coaching focuses on student needs and differentiating instruction. However, coaching also focuses on teacher professional growth. Coaching is a non-evaluative relationship between the coach and a teacher, both of whom share the expressed goal of learning together in order to improve instruction and student growth. The voluntary Collaborative Learning Cycle provides ongoing, consistent support as well as time for implementing teaching strategies, exploring different instructional practices, reflecting on these practices, and examining the impact on our students. Research supports ongoing learning opportunities, such as coaching, whereas “one-time” workshops are less effective.
Jessica Sheaffer is the Literacy Facilitator at Crow Island School and Hubbard Woods School. Jessica was a classroom teacher for many years at Crow Island School before transitioning into the role of Literacy Facilitator in District 36.
Jessica has been an educator for twenty-five years. She earned her BS in Early Childhood Education from the University of Illinois, her MS in bilingual/bicultural education from Northeastern Illinois University, and her Reading Endorsement and English as a Second Language Endorsement from National Louis University.
Jessica has been a Literacy Facilitator in District 36 for eight years. She enjoys bringing current research and resources to the faculty, working with individual teachers during "Collaborative Learning Cycles," joining grade-level conversations about differentiation, and hosting "Learning Lunches" for faculty that center around best-practice in literacy instruction.
Jessica has two young children and loves to share her passion for reading and writing with them. One of their most cherished family experiences is cuddling on the couch with a stack of books.
Elizabeth Marut is the Literacy Facilitator at both Greeley School and The Skokie School. She works half-time in each building with kindergarten through sixth-grade teachers. Elizabeth started as a classroom teacher in Center City Philadelphia, then Chicago Public Schools, and later became a seventh and eighth-grade Language Arts teacher at Washburne School. She has served as the Literacy Facilitator for seven years, partnering with teachers to plan and implement curriculum to meet the literacy needs of all learners. Over the years, she’s enjoyed learning from literacy gurus, including Jennifer Serravallo, Kylene Beers, Mary Ehrenworth, Colleen Cruz, Chris Lehman, Kate Roberts, Cornelius Minor, and many more.
Elizabeth has been an educator for 12 years. She earned her B.A. in English at Saint Mary's College, IN. Upon graduating, she entered the world of advertising as a copywriter, while volunteering to tutor elementary students in English. In 2006, she decided to leave advertising and return to school for her Masters in Secondary Education from the University of Pennsylvania and is also pursuing her M.A. in Reading Specialists certification.
Elizabeth has enjoyed the opportunity to work with so many teachers in both buildings and to see the progression of how students grow from kindergarten to grade eight. She is the mother of two young children and finds happiness seeing characters and stories through her childrens' eyes all over again. Her favorite children’s series is the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo.
