Therapy Dog Program

🐾 Therapy Dog Program Overview
- The Winnetka Public Schools are introducing Winnie, a therapy dog who will support student well-being, connection, and emotional regulation.
- Students will not be introduced to Winnie until after Winter Break. Her introduction to schools will be very slow as she is learning her duties as a therapy dog.
- The program enhances our commitment to student safety and wellness and complements—not replaces—Mr. Ray Finnerty’s role as Director of Safety and Security.
- Therapy dogs are known to reduce stress, increase engagement, and create a calmer learning environment.
Winnie’s Role & Schedule
- Winnie is owned and handled solely by Mr. Finnerty. She will never be left alone with students.
- She will accompany Mr. Finnerty to schools as his schedule allows and will visit classrooms by invitation only—no unannounced “pop-ins.”
- When Winnie is not on campus, she will either be at home or with a designated staff member who will not bring her into student areas.
- As a school therapy dog, Winnie completes several levels of training. She is a graduate of Happy Tails Training Center, and is a current student of Soul Harbor and The Loose Leash Academy
- Each year, families and staff will receive an opt-out form to indicate if they prefer no contact with Winnie—no reason required.
- Winnie will always be on leash and handled by Mr. Finnerty
Student Interaction
