Service class provides a conceptual framework for service learning that is actualized through a variety of activities in fifth grade. The framework revolves around the exploration of values and benefits of service. Activities include using service examples from history and literature, role-playing, hero exploration, and participating in service projects. Reflection upon these activities completes the circle and sets the stage for sixth grade service learning.

In sixth grade, students build upon the framework developed in fifth grade through a variety of authentic service projects. Students are involved in all stages of these projects from the initial idea through final execution. Reflecting upon each project allows students to assess the process, see the value to themselves, their community, and the world and to celebrate their contribution.
