June 11 - School Board Meetings
June 07, 2013
    An Open Work Session Meeting will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 5:15 P.M.  The purpose of this meeting will be for the Board to... receive updates on School Improvement Plans, review the proposal for a One-to-One Mobile Learning Pilot Program, and to discuss School Board Working Agreements.

    The Regularly Scheduled Meeting of the School Board will follow. Data from the STAR Assessment, results of the Annual Survey, the Human Resources Audit, and the tentative FY 2014 budget are on the agenda.

    Community members, parents, and staff are welcome to attend both meetings; they will be held in the Resource Center of Carleton Washburne School, 515 Hibbard Road.

Welcome New Board Members
May 20, 2013
    Two new Board members, Ms. Betsy Owens and Ms. Kendra Wallace, took the oath office on May 7, 2013. They joined returning Board members, Ms.... Dana Crumley, Mr. Matt Hulsizer, Mr. Jon Kaplan, Mr. William Meuer, and Mr. Tom Shannon. Ms. Susan Crowe Whitcomb and Ms. Beth Moritz Filip retired after completing four years of service.

    Mr. Jon Kaplan was elected to serve as President of the Board. Ms. Dana Crumley will serve as Vice President, and Ms. Betsy Owens will serve as Board Secretary and handle communications.

    Dana Fattore Crumley, President of the School Board of Winnetka School District 36, has called for an Executive Session meeting to be held on Tuesday,... May 7, 2013, at 4:30 P.M. All action will be taken in Open Session.

    A Work Session will follow at 5:00 P.M. The purpose of this meeting will be for the Board to review the Math Materials Selection, review the Human Resource Audit, and discuss questions related to District Finances with the Schools Committee of The Winnetka Caucus. The School Board will conduct an Organizational Meeting at 7:15 P.M. The Regularly Scheduled Meeting of the School Board will follow. Summer Work, Compliance, and PTO gifts will be discussed at the Regular Meeting.

    The Work Session, Organizational Meeting, and Regular Meeting will be held in the Carleton Washburne School Resource Center, 515 Hibbard Road, Winnetka. Community, parents, and staff are all welcome to attend these three meetings.

    Parents of incoming Kindergarten students, and families new to District 36, are welcome to join Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction,... and Assessment, Trisha Kocanda, and District staff for a conversation on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 9:30 A.M. District curriculum, history, and what your child can expect when s/he begins Kindergarten next fall will be discussed.

April 25 Presentation - Best Practices in Math Instruction

    Join District Math Consultant, Dr. Nanci Smith, for a Winnetka Parents' Institute presentation on the math program review. Dr. Smith and staff... from The Winnetka Public Schools will be addressing Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the revised curriculum, discussing topics including:

    • How is rigor best addressed in the math environment?

    • Faster is better, right?

    • How do communication and creativity relate to math?

    • If I can use an algorithm, why do I have to understand it?


    Dr. Nanci Smith, a former high school math teacher, is currently a consultant in the areas of Differentiated Instruction, Curriculum (Understanding by Design), Common Core State Standards and Mathematics. She audited the District 36 math program as part of the review process and in addition to her work with The Winnetka Public Schools has provided professional development in 45 states, and worked in schools in Singapore, Japan, and The Netherlands.

    Parents of students of all ages should plan to attend on April 25 at 1:30 P.M. on the third floor of Carleton Washburne School.
