The school psychologist at The Skokie School works with students, families and teachers to identify and address learning and behavior problems that interfere with school success. The school psychologist is certified by the state of Illinois and has completed graduate work in both psychology and education. Within the multi-tiered Response to Intervention model, the school psychologist works with the classroom and special education teachers and parents, to help design and implement academic and behavioral interventions, as well as progress monitoring systems to measure student success. After a period of monitoring targeted interventions, the school psychologist may evaluate eligibility for special education services, in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team. This may include psycho-educational testing, as well as examining the student’s response to intervention. Written parental consent is required for individual services and/or testing.
The school psychologist may provide counseling, instruction, and mentoring for those students struggling with social, emotional and behavioral problems. The school psychologist is involved in the design and implementation of mental health wellness programming and is available to respond to crises. She can also make referrals to families and help coordinate community support services.
