ABSENCES: If your child is to be absent from school for any reason, please call the school office (847-446-0353) or the school nurse (847-446-1048) as early as possible (there is an answering machine). When the school is not notified, it necessitates a call home to find out why your child is absent. Also, it is most important to notify the school if your child is not going to return to school in the afternoon. Children who are ill in the morning should not, in most cases, attend school in the afternoon. Any child who is running a fever with an illness should remain at home until the temperature has been NORMAL FOR 24 HOURS. This gives the child an opportunity to recover completely and avoids exposing other youngsters to your child's malady. Notes regarding your child's absence should be sent to his/her teacher when he/she returns to school. (Return to Top) BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL "CROW CARE" PROGRAM: Crow Island School offers a fee-based morning (7:00-8:25 A.M.) and afternoon (3:15-6:15 P.M.) program housed in the school's 4th Grade wing. The program provides opportunities for children to play outside on the playground, relax and enjoy fun activities with other children, and complete homework. The children are supervised by a core staff of Crow Island Teacher Associates and experienced child care professionals. Information and registration forms are available at the school. In addition, general information is available through Voice Mail at 604-1928. For reservations and schedule changes call the C.I. Entrance Monitor (847-446-0353) during school hours. FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY, during program hours, the staff can be reached at 847-269-0863. (Return to Top) BICYCLES/BLADES: Only children in grades 3 & 4 may ride bikes to school. Each bicycle must pass a safety inspection. New bicycles are inspected in the Spring & Fall. Bikes must be walked on school grounds, not ridden. Bicycles should be PARKED and LOCKED in the racks provided for them near their classroom. Bicycle riders are to wear helmets, and helmets should be kept in lockers, not left on bikes. ROLLER BLADES, ROLLER SKATES, SCOOTERS, SKATEBOARDS OR ANY OTHER WHEELED CONVEYANCES ARE NOT PERMITTED ON SCHOOL GROUNDS. (Return to Top) BULLETIN: The Crow Island Bulletin is sent home with the youngest child in your family every other Monday. Its function is to inform parents about school activities. When you have a notice for the Bulletin, please bring it to the school office and put it in the Bulletin Folder in the PTA box no later than noon Friday. (Return to Top) BUS RIDERS: A guest may ride the bus with a regular bus rider upon receipt of a dated NOTE BY PARENTS. Regular riders need a note for visits requiring a different bus stop. (Return to Top) CONFERENCES: Kindergarten teachers conference with parents in Fall and Spring. Parents of students in grades 1-4 are informed of student progress three times per year through Fall and early Spring conferences, reports, and Portfolio Conference Evenings. (Return to Top) FIELD TRIPS: Be sure to sign and return the permission slip your child brings home before each field trip. This is a legal requirement. (Return to Top) GYM SHOES: A pair should be kept at school for Kinetic Wellness class. They should be labeled with your child's name. (Return to Top) KINETIC WELLNESS EXCUSES: A written excuse from home or a doctor is required. (Return to Top) LEAVING SCHOOL: A note is required whenever a child is to leave school other than usual dismissal hours. Plan to pick up your child either at his/her classroom, in the school office or by the Entrance Monitor in the foyer. Children are not allowed to leave the school grounds during school hours unless they are accompanied by a parent or other authorized adult. It is required that parents sign students in an out of school if they leave outside normal hours (e.g. appointments, early departures, etc.) Students must wait at the Front Desk until their parent arrives to sign them out. (Return to Top) LOST & FOUND: The lost & found is located outside the kindergarten rooms. Please check it periodically as you may find items you were not even aware were missing. (Return to Top) LUNCH PROGRAM: The lunch program is a fee-based optional program offered on an annual basis with or without milk or juice. Registration forms are available by the C.I. Entrance Monitor's desk.
MEDICATION IN SCHOOL: The following procedure must be followed in order for your child to receive medicine in school:
NURSE: The Crow Island School Nurse is at Crow Island each day from 8:00 until 3:30. Please feel free to call her with any concerns (847-446-1048). All communicable diseases should be reported to the school as soon as they are diagnosed. Such diseases include chicken pox, strep throat and scarlet fever. All suspected cases of head lice should be reported to the school nurse at once. (Return to Top) OFFICE: The office is open school days from 8:00 - 4:15. (Return to Top) PETS: Pets may not visit school without first checking with the Office and the TEACHER. (Return to Top) PIONEER ROOM: All third graders in the District are served by this life-size replica of a pioneer cabin, complete with handmade furniture and a fireplace where lunch is cooked. Each child spends one full day in a "pioneer family" as the culmination of an Early American Study. (Return to Top) PLAYGROUND HOURS: Morning supervision on the playground for Grades 1-4 begins at 8:25 A.M. Children on the playground before these times cannot be supervised. In weather not suitable for outdoor play, we ask your help in keeping the children home long enough to permit them to arrive approximately five minutes before the start of school when they can go directly to classrooms. These arrangements will enable us to have children properly supervised at all times on school grounds. (Return to Top) PTO: All parents and teachers are welcome to join the Crow Island PTO. Dues are $10.00 per family per year. (Return to Top) RESOURCE CENTER: Our award-winning Resource Center is an extension of the library facilities, offering an array of multimedia learning materials. Included are computer labs, cooking area, darkroom and a greenhouse. All children use the Resource Center. Volunteers are always needed. (Return to Top) SAFETY: The safety of our children is a continuing concern to parents and school officials.
STUDENT COUNCIL: All students interested in student government and issues of student concern meet during the lunch hour on Mondays in the Auditorium with the Faculty Advisors. Business includes discussion of student issues, planning activities and projects. The Student Council regularly contributes to a variety of charities. (Return to Top) VISITING: Parents are welcome to visit at all times. Please enter through the front door, sign in and obtain a visitor's Name Tag at the Entrance Monitor's desk located just inside the entrance. Please try to arrange a convenient time for both you and the teacher ahead of time. (Return to Top)
